Moths

Butterfly and Moth Image Gallery : Moths

(Catocala paleogama)

This striking moth is one species of a large genus spread throughout North America. The appearance of the moth is an example of protective coloration. The brown forewings, when folded over the hindwings while the moth is at rest, blend in with the background of leaves or bark. If a predator should find it or get too near, the moth can suddenly fly up, displaying its bright orange and black stripes in a startle effect.
