Vanessa virginiensis (American Painted Lady)
The American Painted Lady has a complex pattern of black, orange, and white (spots near the wingtips). Its wingspan is from 2.2 to 2.6 inches. The hind wing's underside has a delicate lace-like white pattern and two large eyespots.
This species lives in open areas like gardens and fields. It appears statewide in Illinois. There are two generations per year. Adults may overwinter in the southernmost areas. Migrants also appear annually. The host plants for larvae are the pussy-toes (Antennaria spp.), pearly everlastings (Anaphalis margaritacea spp.), burdock (Arctium spp.), and thistles and mallows.
