Presented by Mark Wagner, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Archaeological Investigations, Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Southern Illinois was an important training and staging area for Union Troops during the Civil War, and although no large-scale excavations have focused on these sites, the potential exists for significant archaeological research. These locations include Cairo and the U.S. Naval Base at Mound City where ironclad warships were constructed. The drought of 2012 exposed some of these ironclads when the river level was low. Also only recently discovered, three southern Illinois rock art sites contain inscriptions that were created by Union soldiers. Discover Illinois' rich prehistoric and historic past by attending an ISM Paul Mickey Science Series Program. A different speaker and topic are featured each month. For more information on upcoming topics and speakers, please contact Nina Walthall at (217) 782-0061 or (217) 785-0037. - Second Wednesday of each month
- 7:00 to 8:30 PM
