Brownbag Lectures: Imagining Ancestors: Themes and Variations in Prehistoric Fiction

Brownbag Lectures: Imagining Ancestors: Themes and Variations in Prehistoric Fiction

  • Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
  • Date: Wednesday, January 30, 2013, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Presented by:
Lynn E. Fisher, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Anthropology
Chair, Sociology/Anthropology Department
University of Illinois Springfield
ISM Research Associate

This is a second installment in Dr. Fisher's on-going adventures in reading and reflecting on fiction set in prehistoric times. In this presentation she will compare fictional depictions of ancient women, men and societies in selected novels set in ancient (mostly Stone Age) Europe. Lynn will explore some persistent themes, such as technology and innovation, critiques of modern society, use of humor, and coming of age stories. She will also point to some of the ways in which fictional portrayals have changed over the 150 years since the earliest prehistoric fiction. As she continues this exploration of prehistoric fiction, Lynn hopes to learn more about some of the questions, curiosities, and even anxieties that writers bring to thinking about ancient ancestors.
