Research in Entomology

  Hine's Emerald Dragonfly

Hine's Emerald Dragonfly

The Illinois State Museum has an active research program in Entomology. The strengths of the program include research on Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) and Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) of Illinois and the Midwestern United States.

One of the most exciting areas of current research is on the distribution, ecology, behavior, and genetic variation of Hine's emerald dragonfly (Somatochlora hineana). This species is on the Federal and Illinois State endangered species list. Two ISM scientists are on the Recovery Team for this species.
