The Illinois State Museum opened its doors in Chicago in May, 1985, with the inauguration of the distinctively post-modern James R. Thompson Center, designed by Chicago architect Helmut Jahn. Our recently renovated spacious galleries have for twenty years specialized in showcasing contemporary and historical fine artists such as Edith Altman, Don Baum, Phyllis Bramson, Rodney Carswell, Tom Czarnopys, Ruth Duckworth, Julia Fish, Judith Geichman, Theodore Halkin, Richard Hunt, Mr. Imagination, Michiko Itatani, Vera Clement, and Frank Piatek, along with important historic artists such as Gertrude Abercrombie, Manierre Dawson, G.P.A. Healy, Nathan Lerner, Lazslo Moholy-Nazy, and William Schwartz, to name a few.

Our exhibition schedule ranges across mediums, including our outstanding quilt collection in the Decorative Arts area to electronic art, installations, and collaborative exhibitions wilth community organizations.

We provide free group tours and special programs upon request. Please call 312.814.5322 for an appointment.
