Populus deltoides (Cottonwood)
Cottonwood trees grow from southern Alberta to southern Ontario in Canada, south as far as the Gulf Coast and east to the Carolinas. They grow in wet soils and along streams, on flood plains and sandbars.
Leaves are triangular in shape (indicated by the name deltoides), yellowish-green, and stalked. Bark is also yellowish-green and smooth, but changes to gray and furrowed. The flowers are 2" to 3 1/2" brownish catkins (shown in this specimen). Fruits are 3/8" greenish-brown elliptical capsules on stalks in the catkins. They burst with many cottony seeds.
