Carya laciniosa (Kingnut Hickory)
Kingnut hickory, as the name implies, has the largest hickory nuts of the hickory nut trees. Kingnut hickory grows to 100 feet tall in the central midwest, from SE Iowa to Ohio and as far south as northen Tennessee. It also grows locally eastward into New York and south into Georgia. It grows in moist or wet soils of flood plains and valleys. This specimen shows the pinnately compound, serrated, lance-shaped leaves that are shiny dark green above and paler and hairy on the undersides. The bark is light gray and becomes shaggy. The nuts are round and think-shelled.
