Rosa palustris (Swamp Rose)
Swamp rose is a shrub that grows to six feet in swamps, marshes, and along stream banks. It grows from Minnesota to Nova Scotia, south to Florida, and west along the gulf of Mexico. In Illinois, it is present in northern marshes and in the bald cypress swamps in southern parts of the state. The leaves are pinnately compound, usually with seven oval leaflets. Flowers (shown here) are solitary, pink, and fragrant. The fruits, up to 1/2" in diameter, are rose hips.
