Fraxinus nigra (Black Ash)
This specimen of black ash shows two pinnately compound leaves and clusters of fruits. Black ash grows east from Minnesota to Maine, and south from Canada to the mid-section of Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. It grows to 50 feet tall in wet soils, such as in swamps and peat bogs, and in badly drained forests. Leaf undersides are lighter green with hairy red tufts along the midvein. The soft, corky bark is gray. Late summer fruits have oblong wings and hang in clusters. The flexible wood has been used in making barrel hoops, woven chair seats, and baskets.
