Carya ovata (Shagbark Hickory)
Shagbark hickory trees grow from the southeast corner of Minnesota east to southwest Maine, south to Georgia and west to east Texas. Its habitat is moist valley soils and upland slopes, where it reaches 70 to 100 feet in height. This specimen shows the yellow-green lance-shaped leaves with saw-toothed margins and two round fruits, consisting of a thick brown husk enclosing a light brown nut.
