Carpinus caroliniana (Blue Beech)
Blue beech or American hornbeam is a small shrubby tree, often with multiple trunks that grows to 30 feet in rich, moist soils along streams and valleys. Its range stretches from eastern Minnesota across southern Canada into Maine, south along the Atlantic coast to northern Florida, west to eastern Texas and north to Minnesota. The dull dark blue-green leaves are elliptical with long points. They are double serrated. Bark is smooth and blue-gray. This specimen exhibits greenish 1 1/2" male catkin flowers. Fruits are 1/4" paired nutlets.
