Acer negundo (Boxelder)
Boxelder is in the maple family, but its name refers its having leaves shaped like those of elder trees (Sambuco) and white wood like that of Box (Buxus). Boxelder grows from Alberta, Canada east to New York and south as far west as Texas and east as Florida. It grows in wet and moist soils along streams and in valleys. Its light green leaves are pinnately compound, six inches long, one and a half inches wide, and leaflets are often lobed. Bark is light gray-brown with deepening fissures. The fruits are pale yellow, paired, winged seeds that remain through the winter after maturing in summer (shown in this speciemen).
