Androppogon gerardii (Big bluestem)
This specimen of Big Bluestem shows a reddish brown color in the stem and leaves that sometimes appears in the fall. The stems are normally green with a bluish tint, giving the plant its common name. Big Bluestem can grow to nine feet in height. It flowers in summer. It grows throughout the tallgrass prairie region, particularly in mesic areas.
