Alnus serrulata (Speckled Alder)
Speckled alder is a small tree or shrub that grows to 20 feet inwet soils of swamps and at the edges of streams andlakes. it grows from eastern Canada through New england south to northern Florida, west to eastern Texas and north to Missouri and the southern half of Illinois. Leaves are elliptical, wavy, and saw-toothed in dull green. Bark is smooth and brown. This specimen shows the male catkins and the female cones containing nutlets.
