Reds on the Frank Buchholz Farm in Merlin, Illinois circa 1920
Illinois Sate Museum Collection
Pigs have been a part of Illinois farming since the early settlers brought them over from England and other European countries. Some breeds fared better than others in their new home. Breed popularities have changed over the years. Cross-breeding has been done to give farmers the qualities they want in their herd.
