Anthropology collections at the Illinois State Museum include about 7.5 million objects that document the cultural history of people who have lived in Illinois during the past 12,000 years.

Most of these objects are artifacts recovered by archaeologists at prehistoric Native American camp sites and villages. The carved wooden maskette and the frog-effigy pipe shown here are examples of prehistoric artifacts.

Other objects, such as the Ojibwa beaded jacket, are part of the Museum's ethnographic collection. This collection includes about 3,500 artifacts that were made historically by Native Americans and other ethnic groups.
