Excavation Activity

During a survey (a systematic search for sites), Illinois State Museum archaeologists found Native American artifacts at this site on the bank of the Illinois River. They found and collected bits of 1800-year-old pottery and other artifacts typical of a village.

The archaeologists' goal is to find the precise location of that village. The search is complicated because the site could be buried beneath sediment left behind by recent floods. Because pieces of pottery were found on the river bank, we can guess that the river washed away part of the village.

Join our interactive expedition (Flash 5 required) as we search for this prehistoric village. Learn what tools archaeologists use to find sites. Study artifacts, identify them, determine their age, and discover what they tell us about the past.
