The brownish-black and orange markings give this dragonfly its common name. Its face and eyes are reddish-brown; The thorax is brown; the abdomen is black with subtle red markings down the center. It has a fluttery flight similar to that of butterflies.
This species lives on ponds, although it often patrols fields in search of prey. They are common and seen in flight from mid-June through September.
