A Special Event in the Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery
A reading by Native American author Sharon Skolnick from her book Where Courage Is Like a Wild Horse. DATE: Thursday, October 29, 2009: 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Sharon Skolnick, a member of the Fort Sill Apache Tribe, is a Chicago artist, writer, and former gallery owner. Where Courage Is Like a Wild Horse is a portrait of the world of an Indian orphanage from the perspective of a woman who survived in the Indian welfare system and became an Apace artist. Where Courage Is Like a Wild Horse received an award from Friends of American Writers, Chicago, in 1998. As wards of the state of Oklahoma, Sharon Skolnick and her sister lived at the predominately Indian Murrow Orphanage. The book depicts those years and the challenges that they endured as orphans and sisters. Sharon found comfort and meaning as an aspiring artist; while, her sister's hope was finding a new mother and family through the adoption process. Please join us for this moving presentation. The free event is part of Chicago Artists Month and is a collaborative presentation with the American Indian Center of Chicago and Native American Heritage Month. Everyone is welcome. The Gallery is wheel-chair accessible. The Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery is located in the James R. Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph Street, Suite 2-100, Chicago, Illinois.
