Ready or Not: Preparing for Severe Weather Disasters Saturday, January 28, 2012 - 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. SPRINGFIELD – On Saturday, January 28 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., the Illinois State Museum will present the annual Carrol Hall Science Series for students in grades 6 – 8, Ready or Not: Preparing for Severe Weather and Disasters. This program is free, but advanced registration is required by January 23. Students can register online at bit.ly/chall2012 or print and mail a registration form. Disaster preparedness expert Eddy Weiss will present an engaging interactive program on severe weather trends, climate change, and how to prepare for natural disasters. Participants will then learn more about tornadoes through hands-on science activities and create a disaster safety poster to display what they have learned. Students who participate in this event will be equipped to share the lessons they have learned about disaster preparedness and safety in their community. Recognized as a respected authority in the areas of Disaster Preparedness, Strategic Planning, Disaster Mitigation and practical problem solving, Eddy Weiss has traveled across the United States presenting to schools, businesses, chambers, civic groups, and libraries creating a more educated and safer America. Currently, Weiss serves as Assistant Director of Chasing4Life (www.chasing4life.org) as well as for The Whirlwind Foundation. Weiss has been recognized for his work by many organizations and groups throughout the United States, and has recently received a Presidential award for a lifetime of service to America’s communities. This is the thirteenth in a series of annual science programs funded by a generous bequest from the Carrol C. Hall estate to the Illinois State Museum Society. Mr. Hall was a prominent and respected educator who taught chemistry for 28 years at Springfield High School and was a co-founder of Horace Mann Insurance Company. The Illinois State Museum is located at 502 S. Spring Street (the corner of Spring and Edwards Streets) in Springfield, and is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Parking is available nearby, and the building is ADA accessible.
