The uppermost layer is the canopy. It is represented by the crowns of the tallest trees. In healthy forests, the canopy layer and understory contain trees of all ages. Canopy layer trees experience a different environment than trees at lower levels. There is more wind and greater light intensity. Water vapor loss from leaves at this level is potentially greater.
