Chestnut oak has wavy leaf margins, bitter, inedible acorns, and darker bark. These characteristics are shared by several other oaks inthe white oak group and warrant a special subdivision within the white oak group - the chestnut oaks. Swamp oak and chinkapin oak fall into this subdivision of the white oaks.
