The Karner Blue occurs in small isolated colonies from New Hampshire and New York (East) across the United States to Michigan and Wisconsin (Midwest). It may occur in Illinois in sandy prairie habitat where larvae feed on lupine. The presence of lupine is dependent on fire or other disturbances to aid in competition with woody plants.

It is state and federally listed as an endangered species.
