Courthouse Steps (Variation)

Clara Rush Moore (1867 - 1949) and Susan Rush McCravey (1875 - 1939) Bourbon Township, Douglas County, Illinois
Courthouse Steps Log Cabin Quilt, circa 1910 - 1920.
Silk, chiffon, velvet, 91 by 69 inches
Illinois State Museum collection
Gift of Miss Modesta Scott, Arcola, Illinois (1975.10)

Two sisters made this version of Courthouse Steps. They probably constructed it in sections because the color of each side of one block is repeated in its neighboring blocks. The green silky backing fabric is knotted with pink thread to the foundation cloth, the thread does not show through on the quilt top.

Block detail diagram

Why do some of the blocks look lopsided or skewed instead of symmetrical?
Hint: Find a red center square. In what order did the quilters sew the strips onto it (around and around, or across from each other)?
