Brick Laying

Adrian Troy (1901 - )
Brick Laying, circa 1935
woodcut, 6 1/2 by 9 inches
Illinois State Museum Collection

This black-and-white woodcut print shows a team of street workers repairing a brick street. The artist presents the figures in three different scales (sizes).
What is he attempting to show by doing this?

What other drawing techniques does he use to show distance?

Adrian Troy, an African-American artist, was the illustrator of a WPA-funded book titled Cavalcade of the American Negro. Edited by Arna Bontemps, it told about the contributions of black Americans from 1865 to 1940. It was published for the Chicago Diamond Jubilee Exposition of 1940.
