Sunday on the Farm

Thorvald Hoyer (1872 - 1949)
Sunday on the Farm, 1936
oil on canvas, 24 by 35 inches
Illinois State Museum Collection

How is the title, Sunday on the Farm, reflected by the lack of activity in this painting?

How did the artist achieve such a motionless scene?

What details are realistic? Is the whole picture realistic? Why or why not?

Thorvald Hoyer was born in Copenhagen and studied at the Royal Academy there. His first career was as an acrobat, until the age of 42, when he became a full-time painter. Working for the WPA as an easel artist helped him start his artistic career. The National Headquarters of the FAP organized traveling exhibitions of artists' work at art centers around the country. Hoyer had two solo exhibitions in Chicago and Milwaukee.
