Paul Mickey Science Series: The New Deal in Illinois Archaeology
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, December 10, 2008, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Presented by: Mary R. McCorvie, U.S. Forest Service The year 2008 marks the 75th anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) program, which included more than a dozen large-scale archaeological excavations in Illinois. Ms. McCorvie will present an overview of the program by highlightling some of the people involved in the projects and the sites at which they worked. Designed to provide work for Illinois' unemployed rural work force, the WPA investigations also established field methods and techniques still used today and defined the basic prehistoric cultural chronology.
