Paul Mickey Science Series: Building Bridges: IDOT Archaeology and Tribal Consultation

Presented by: Brad A. Koldehoff, Cultural Resources Coordinator, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Dr. John Walthall, Chief Archaeologist, Illinois Department of Transportation Archaeological excavations conducted in advance of major transportation projects have for decades yielded new and important information about the peoples of Illinois’ past. In this presentation, significant new discoveries are highlighted, in particular, recent discoveries made at the ongoing excavations in East St. Louis for the New Mississippi River Bridge. Also highlighted are IDOT’s award-winning efforts at incorporating federally-recognized American Indian tribes into the planning of transportation projects and the documentation of Illinois’ past.
