Paul Mickey Science Series: Quarries and Culture: Trade in the Southern German Neolithic

  • Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
  • Date: Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Presented by Dr. Lynn Fisher, Associate Professor of Anthropology, University of Illinois-Springfield; Adjunct Research Associate, Illinois State Museum

This presentation describes recent results of investigations at a Neolithic stone quarry near Ulm, Germany, on the upper Danube River. In the summer of 2011, our international research group consulted with geologists and archaeologists in several regions of southern Germany and Switzerland to begin to trace out the networks of trade and communication that likely linked this quarry (one of few known in Germany) to villages and tool-makers in surrounding regions. Cultural influences as seen in ceramics suggest ties to Bavaria in the east, while initial indications suggest chert from this region may have been traded to the southwest and north.
