Brownbag Lectures: Recent Cave Paleontological Research at the Illinois State Museum
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Presented by Dr. Chris Widga, Assistant Curator of Geology, Illinois State Museum The Illinois State Museum has had an active cave paleontology research program since the 1950s. This talk will discuss modern approaches to the analysis of fossils from caves, including recent advances in the study of ancient DNA and radiocarbon dating. These analyses are directly relevant to ongoing fieldwork in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky and the caves of the Driftless Area of Minnesota. Together, new technology and field investigations can provide detailed insight into the dynamics of Quaternary ecosystems.
