Brownbag Lectures: Understanding the Urge to Embellish

  • Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
  • Date: Wednesday, April 06, 2011, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Presented by: Jim Zimmer, Director of Lockport Gallery, Illinois State Museum, Lockport, IL

Jim Zimmer, curator of The Urge to Embellish, will explore some of the fascinating objects from the current exhibition and share their insightful and often surprising stories.

From Fishing lures to home furnishings, from commemorative objects to apparel, and from utilitarian items to whimsies, Zimmer will examine the motivations for making these objects over the last two centuries and discuss the use of sometimes unconventional materials such as porcupine quills, butterfly wings and even human hair.
