Paul Mickey Science Series: New Evidence that Ancient Cahokians "Missionized" Wisconsin
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, March 09, 2011, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Presented by Dr. Timothy R. Pauketat, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign New excavations by the Universities of Illinois and Wisconsin now provide definitive evidence of a nearly pure, early Cahokian (ca. AD 1050-1100) civic and ceremonial occupation of Trempealeau, Wisconsin, 600 km north of Cahokia. To date, this "Mississippian Initiatives" project has mapped and tested a bluff-top mound and borrow pit complex, investigated portions of five related wall-trench houses, and excavated portions of an intensive downslope midden filled with St. Louis area chert tool debris and sherds of ceramic vessels made in, or in the style of, Cahokia. Dr. Pauketat suggests that a small enclave of southerners lived in the northcountry for two or three decades, without fear of molestation, probably so they could spread their new religion.
