Paul Mickey Science Series: The Old Main Project: Archaeology and Oral History at Illinois State University
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, February 09, 2011, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Presented by Dr. James M. Skibo and Dr. Gina L. Hunter, Illinois State University Old Main was the first building of Illinois State Normal University, the oldest State institution of higher learning in Illinois. More than the physical center of campus, Old Main was an inspirational place for the many people who lived and worked within its walls and in its shadow during the structure's 100-year history. The Old Main Project is dedicated to telling the building's proud history through the analysis of artifacts recovered during excavations in 1981, which discovered refuse-filled cisterns and parts of the building's foundation. Oral histories from students who attended the university from 1933 through 1942 help to reveal additional details about daily life at the central Illinois teacher's college.
