Paul Mickey Science Series: From Mound Builders to Stockyard Workers: The Archaeology of East St. Louis
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, December 08, 2010, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Presented by Brad Koldehoff, Illinois Department of Transportation
IDOT's New Mississippi River Bridge Project has provided the opportunity for large-scale excavations in East St. Louis by University of Illinois' archaeologists. Hidden beneath layers of cindery fill and concrete slabs are hundreds of well-preserved Mississippian (A.D. 1000-1200) house floors and storage pits, which in some areas are cut by late 19th-century privies and cisterns used by early stockyard workers. These discoveries permit an unprecedented look at the daily lives of both groups.
