Paul Mickey Science Series: From the Bottom: Recent Investigations in theSequence of Ritual Activities at Cahokia's Mound 34 & the Pre-mound Copper Workshop

  • Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
  • Date: Wednesday, October 13, 2010, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Presented by Dr. John E. Kelly, Washington University, St. Louis

The investigations into the pre-mound landscape of Mound 34 exposed and documented a copper workshop initially identified by Gregory Perino in 1956. This work has added to our knowledge of the complex nature of the ritual activity that took place before the mound's creation. While the focus of the past four seasons' excavations has centered on the context of copper working within the confines of a wall-trench structure, it has become apparent that this is only one of a number of unique ritual activities that occurred there.
