Paul Mickey Science Series: Hopewell in Michigan: What's Up North?

  • Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
  • Date: Wednesday, September 08, 2010, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Presented by Dr. John Halsey, State Archaeologist of Michigan

There definitely is Hopewell in Michigan, but it is very different from the phenomena seen in the heartlands of Ohio and Illinois. With smaller mounds, no earthworks, and a slimmed-down artifact assemblage, Hopewellian mound sites are found, singly and in groups, at a number of locations in west Michigan. A separate Hopewellian tradition developed in the Saginaw River Valley of east-central Michigan. Habitation sites are exceptionally rare. This presentation traces the results of Hopewellian research across Michigan from the mid-19th century to present times, but focuses on the better known sites, Norton and Converse.
