  Illinois State Museum Announces Play Museum Opening March 26, 2011   

SPRINGFIELD, IL - The new Play Museum, a hands-on children’s gallery at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, will open on Saturday, March 26 with a grand opening celebration from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. The new, kid-friendly Play Museum is designed for children ages 3 – 11. Children will learn through play what it is like to work at a museum. In the Play Museum children can excavate mastodont bones, load a jeep for an expedition, crawl through a cave, touch animal skulls, frame and display art, and much more. As the Play Museum opens, A Place for Discovery, the current children’s gallery, will be closing after 29 years. The Museum will celebrate A Place for Discovery’s rich history with a special Super Saturday program, “Three Cheers for A Place for Discovery on March 12 from 10 am to 4:00 pm. A Place for Discovery will be open through March 20. A Place for Discovery has served families in the Springfield community for several generations.  The Play Museum is a brand new, colorful, and engaging space for children to learn and play.

The Illinois State Museum promotes discovery, learning, and an appreciation of Illinois’ natural, cultural, and artistic heritage. The Museum’s extensive collections and research activities provide the foundation for exhibitions and public programs that tell the story of the land, life, people, and art of Illinois. The Illinois State Museum is located at 502 S. Spring Street (the corner of Spring and Edwards Streets) in Springfield, and is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday.  Admission is free.  Parking is available nearby, and the building is ADA accessible.
