Press Room --
Super Saturday and Collector's Day 2010 SPRINGFIELD – On November 13, the Museum will present two public programs for children and adults. The monthly Super Saturday program “Illinois Indians: Then and Now” will take place from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. In celebration of “National American Indian Heritage Month,” the program will feature activities designed to teach children about American Indian culture in Illinois. Children will make their own talking stick, create a story telling bag, participate in a fun search activity, and more. Families will learn all about continuing American Indian culture with a focus on art, music, dance, and stories. November was authorized as “National American Indian Heritage Month” by Congress in 1990. “National American Indian Heritage Month” celebrates accomplishments of the original inhabitants of the United States. All Super Saturdays in A Place for Discovery are designed especially for children 4-8 years old and are free and open to the public. Most activities can be completed in 30 to 45 minutes, although participants are welcome to stay for as long as they wish. Parents are invited to participate with their children. The Super Saturday series is sponsored by the Bank of Springfield. For more information on Super Saturday, contact Anna Studstill at astudstill@museum.state.il.us or (217) 782-6044. Collector’s Day will also take place November 13 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Collectors have played an important role in the history of many museums. Much of the State Museum’s collections were donated by individuals. Collectors from across Central Illinois will display their treasures at the Museum and answer questions for visitors. This year’s displays will include antique cameras and tools, model houses and trains, collectibles and memorabilia, toys and tops, and more. This event is free and open to the public. No buying, selling, or appraisals will be allowed. For more information contact Nina Walthall at walthall@museum.state.il.us or (217) 782-0061. The Illinois State Museum promotes discovery, learning, and an appreciation of Illinois' natural, cultural, and artistic heritage. The Museum's extensive collections and research activities provide the foundation for exhibitions and public programs that tell the story of the land, life, people, and art of Illinois. The Illinois State Museum is located at 502 S. Spring Street (the corner of Spring and Edwards Streets) in Springfield, and is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
