  Save the Frogs Day

Save the Frogs Day

  • Location: Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Springfield
  • Date: Friday, April 29, 2011, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

On Friday, April 29th, the Illinois State Museum is participating in the 3rd annual international Save the Frogs Day. On this day, the Museum and other organizations around the country will seek to raise awareness of the alarming and rapid disappearance of frog and other amphibian species worldwide.

Visitors will be able to search for amphibians in the Museum’s natural history exhibition, Changes, with a Changes Checklist search activity or with their cell phones via the SCVNGR game. A computer game featuring frog calls will also be available in the Changes exhibition. From 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., a docent will have frog specimens from the Museum’s collections on display and will be able to answer questions. Visitors will also take home a commemorative bookmark as well as a frog origami project to continue the fun at home.

Save the Frogs is an organization founded by Dr. Kerry Kriger in Santa Cruz, California. According to the Save the Frogs Web site, “nearly one third of the world’s amphibian species are threatened with extinction.” In Illinois, four species of salamanders are endangered and the threatened species list includes two salamanders and three frogs. The Illinois State Museum is pleased to join with Save the Frogs to raise awareness about the importance of frog species to our state.
