LOCKPORT—The Perspective series of free public programs continues at the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery on Sunday, December 5th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm with a multi-media presentation Art That Challenges 101. This event is part of the series of free Sunday programs accompanying the current exhibition Pathways and Portals: Art, Nature and Science. Reservations are not required, but seating is limited. Admission is free. Art can be beautiful, revealing, and metaphorical. Its meaning can be direct or elusive, serious or funny. And, yes, one of the functions of art is to challenge the status quo, to question how people perceive artistic expression, to push the envelope of aesthetic standards, and to get the viewer to step out of their comfort zone. But, then, how does one approach these works? What tools can we use to view art so that we can learn and, hopefully, appreciate that which is new to us? Join ISM Lockport Gallery staff members Jim Zimmer and Jennifer Jaskowiak as they explore some of the more challenging pieces in the history of art. Then, put your viewing skills to use to approach some of the contemporary works in the current exhibition. Pathways and Portals: Art, Nature and Science, now on display at the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery, features the work of thirteen Illinois artists and one Illinois-based collaborative project and presents mythology, science, religion, nature and art as portals to other realms and to our understanding and appreciation of the wonders which surround us daily. Work includes multimedia installation, drawing, painting, and sculpture by artists Granite Amit, (art)n, AnnMarie Cernoch, Michele Corazzo, Shawn Decker, Indira Johnson, James Mesple, Kelley Quinn, Dusty Seno, Eugene Skala, Sharon Skolnick (aka Okee-Chee), Michelle Stone, Joan Truckenbrod, and Robert Wapahi. The exhibition runs through February 18, 2011. The Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery is located on the first floor of the historic Norton Building at 201 West 10th Street in Lockport, Illinois, and is fully accessible to all physically challenged individuals. Museum hours are noon until 5:00 pm on Sunday and 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The Museum is closed Saturdays and State Holidays, including November 25 and November 26. Admission is free.
