Illinois Valley Archaeological Society Lecture
- Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
- Date: Tuesday, February 03, 2009, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
The Illinois Valley Archaeological Society (IVAS) will meet Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown. Dr. Michael Conner, Dickson Mounds Museum will present a lecture on the Big Eddy Site which is located along the Sac River in Cedar County, Missouri. This site is one of the most important archaeological sites in Missouri, perhaps in the country. It contains layered deposits spanning nearly the full range of Native American occupation of the state. Especially significant are the earliest remains, which include several extensive occupation layers dating to the Paleoindian period about 10,000-12,000 years ago. There is also possible evidence of earlier use of the site by humans, making it one of the continent's critical sites for understanding the beginnings of the human story of North America. The site was excavated by archaeologists at Missouri State University with funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the National Geographic Society, and other institutions.
IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome. For more information call 309-547-3721.
