Hickory Ridge Concert Series: Compass Comes to Hickory Ridge

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Saturday, October 18, 2008, 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

The Hickory Ridge Concert Series will host the folk group Compass Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the Dickson Mounds Museum.

Literally coming from different musical directions, the members of Compass are united by the diversity of their influences.  Their music combines well known tunes from "the folk scare of the 60s", traditional folk and Celtic songs, some acappella, and a wealth of original material played on guitar, bass, Irish bouzouki, whistle, harmonica, mandolin and assorted percussion.

Compass is comprised of four men in search of a direction.  Members of The Lake County Folk Club, Jerry Thiel, Dave Borton, Chuck VanderVennet and Tom Bradfish formed this quartet from a mutual desire to unleash their passion for folk music.  They will be performing music from their recently released recording Prime Meridian which reflects a diversity of folk influences that covers the range from traditional to contemporary to original songs.  If you like sea shanties sung by "manly men," there's "Roll the Old Chariot," a traditional tune that finds authentic treatment by the band.  For that traditional folk sound, try "Follow That Light," "Rollin' Down That Highway," and "Time and Place” are reminiscent of the New Christy Minstrels with a little bit of The Kingston Trio thrown in for good measure.  If you like Gaelic Storm and other Celtic-flavored bands, you'll be drawn to "Bright Green Eyes," "The Leaving of Liverpool.  It's great sing-along music!

The Hickory Ridge Concert Series is hosted by singer-songwriter Chris Vallillo.  Concerts are held the 3rd Saturday of every month at Dickson Mounds Museum and begin at 7:30 p.m. with the museum lobby opening at 6:30 p.m.  Coffee, drinks, and a variety of desserts are available during intermission.  There is an admission charge of $5.00 per adult — $3.00 for children under 12.  Sitting is limited to the first 150 people.  You can also visit the concert series web site at https://hickoryridge.outfitters.com/.
