An Archaeological Investigation of "Man's Best Friend"
- Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
- Date: Tuesday, May 01, 2012, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
The Illinois Valley Archaeological Society (IVAS) lecture will be Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. featuring Dr. Chris Widga, Assistant Curator of Geology at the Illinois State Museum, presenting "Canine Companions: A Natural History of the Domestic Dog". The monthly program is held at the Dickson Mounds auditorium. Dr. Widga will review recent genetic, morphological, and archaeological research in the study of dog domestication, including important finds at prehistoric Native American sites in Illinois and elsewhere in the Midwest. As the earliest domesticated animal, the dog has been integrated into almost every aspect of human society. Whether used for hunting, transportation, or quiet companionship, domesticated canids provide a uniquely detailed perspective on evolution and the role animals play in human culture. IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome. For more information call 309.547.3721.
