Emiquon Partnership Science Lecture Series
- Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
- Date: Sunday, January 08, 2012, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
The Emiquon Partnership will launch a monthly science lecture series on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the Dickson Mounds Museum auditorium. The kick-off presentation is titled “The Life and Times of the Illinois River” to be presented by Dr. Michael Wiant, Director of Dickson Mounds. The Life and Times of the Illinois River recounts the geological history of the river valley and how humans have put that waterway to work. Drawing on features of the landscape visible today, we’ll travel through time to tell the story of the river. The Illinois River valley was once part of the Michigan River delta positioned near the earth’s equator, and it was the confluence of two great rivers, the Mississippi and the Teays. Near the end of the Ice Age, the valley was deepened and expanded by a colossal flood. Today, the river is a slow, quiet canal, flowing through a landscape that has many stories to tell about river history. The purpose of the Science Lecture Series is to provide citizens with the opportunity to learn more about this central Illinois River environment. We’ll draw on the expertise of a variety of scientists to talk about geology, plant and animal behavior ranging from bird migration to the whitetail deer rut to Thompson lake fishing; from mushrooms to the Perseid meteor shower; and human history ranging from topics such as global climate warming to man’s use of the landscape through time. We’ll also welcome suggested topics from the audience. The Emiquon Partnership is a consortium of Dickson Mounds Museum, The Nature Conservancy, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and University of Illinois Springfield. These organizations have joined together to restore wetland habitats along this stretch of the Illinois River, to understand how wetlands work, and to enrich the public’s knowledge and understanding about their natural world. The Science lecture series is free and open to the public. The Illinois State Museum - Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations.
