Winter Gathering
- Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
- Date: Saturday, January 21, 2012, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
The Dickson Mounds Museum will be hosting a traditional Native American Winter Gathering on Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. The Winter Gathering will feature a variety of activities and demonstrations, including storytelling, music, group games and dances, doll making, and beading. Visitors will witness the dedication of Dorothy’s Grove, a Native American naming ceremony, and other traditional ceremonies. Dorothy’s Grove was named in honor of Dorothy Lakota, who died in 2003 at the age of 84 and who celebrated life with compassion and action for those with few opportunities. She was involved in a variety of social programs in Peoria ranging from the NAACP to Girl Scouts. Her Native American roots extended to the Yakima tribe in America’s great northwest. With others in the area, she promoted the Return to Pimiteoui Pow Wow, an annual event that celebrated Native American culture with drum and dance, and educational presentations for young and old alike. Dorothy long supported the Museum and its mission to chronicle Native American history in the Illinois River valley and celebrate their contributions to humanity especially when the Museum faced difficult challenges. The event is open to the public and admission is free. There will be activities for all ages. Visitors are encouraged enjoy supper at one of the many local restaurants in either Lewistown or Havana and to return to the Museum for the Hickory Ridge Concert Series, a monthly musical concert, at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children.
