More than Meat and Marrow: The Craft of Making Artifacts from Bone and Shell

On Tuesday, November 1, 2011, Dr. Terrance Martin, Curator and Chair of Anthropology, Illinois State Museum, will discuss the findings from excavations, focusing on the bone artifacts, in a talk entitled "More than Meat and Marrow: The Craft of Making Artifacts from Bone and Shell." The lecture is at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds as part of the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society, which is open to the public.
This presentation will provide a survey of various kinds of artifacts made from bone and shell. Most of the specimens to be discussed are those that were encountered during research on archaeological sites from across the Midwest and Upper Great Lakes, including both prehistoric and historical contexts. The artifacts include a wide range of functions (such as tools, gaming pieces, and ornaments) and were made from different species of vertebrates and invertebrates.
