New Insights at the Morton Village Excavation

New Insights at the Morton Village Excavation

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Tuesday, October 04, 2011, 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM

On Tuesday, October 4, 2011, Dr. Michael Conner, Curator of Anthropology, Dickson Mounds Museum, will discuss the ongoing excavations at the Morton Village site in a talk entitled "Reading the Dirt: New Insights into Oneota in the Central Illinois Valley."   The lecture is at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds as part of the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society, which is open to the public.

The project is joint venture between Dickson Mounds Museum and Michigan State University.  The village was occupied by people of the Oneota cultural tradition between about A.D. 1300 and 1400.  The Oneota people were migrants into the region from somewhere to north in Iowa or Wisconsin.  The village also contains evidence of local Mississippian Indians who had lived in the area for several centuries.  New evidence suggests that the Oneota and Mississippian people may have been living at the site together, though this is still uncertain.  The site contains at least 75 dwellings and numerous pits used for cooking, storage, and other functions.  It also contains an Oneota building that may have been used for councils or ceremonies; its contents and architecture are unique in Oneota and Mississippian archaeology.

IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome.  For more information call 309.547.3721.
