- Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
- Date: Tuesday, April 05, 2011, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
On Tuesday, April 5, 2011, Dawn Cobb, Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, and Dr. Hal Hassen, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, will present the newly released documentary film Earth, Stone & Memories. The presentation is at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown, Illinois as part of the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society, which is open to the public. This one-hour film features efforts to preserve historic cemeteries in southern Illinois and was produced and directed by Richard Kuenneke. The film highlights the efforts of Dawn Cobb and Hal Hassen, among others. Sometimes the best history is carved in stone… Earth, Stone & Memories offers insight into the basic questions that surround historic cemeteries as explained through the work and passion of historians, archaeologists, genealogists, and many others. You’ll learn how historic cemeteries engage our imagination, our emotion, and inspire us to learn more. Historic Illinois cemeteries are threatened by neglect and vandalism. Nevertheless, there are opportunities for local communities to save these valuable resources and preserve the historical information they provide. Cobb and Hassen will be on hand to answer questions about cemetery preservation. IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome. For more information call 309.547.3721.
