Myer-Dickson: New Perspectives on Life around Dickson Mounds
- Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
- Date: Tuesday, March 01, 2011, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
On Tuesday, March 1, 2011, Dr. Michael Conner, Curator of Anthropology at Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown, Illinois, will give a presentation reviewing research on occupation at the Myer-Dickson site at Dickson Mounds. The lecture is at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown, Illinois as part of the monthly meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society, which is open to the public. Though best known for its many prehistoric burials, the Dickson Mounds site also contains extensive areas where people lived in the past. Dr. Conner will review research on the two major periods of occupation at what is referred to as the Myer-Dickson area on the bluff adjacent to Dickson Mounds. The first occupation took place around A.D. 600-800, several centuries before any burial activity in the area. The second occupation was during the Mississippian period about A.D. 1175 to 1250, a time when the Dickson Mounds burial area was in active use. This occupation was marked by construction of the second largest prehistoric building known in Illinois. IVAS programs are free of charge and the public is welcome.
